Non-human listening
Palazzo Grassi - Punta della dogana, 2024masterclass and score for performance

The Masterclass initiates a reflection on listening to the non-human from the direct experience of the participants. The workshop introduces basic notions of acoustic ecology and offers an overview of the trajectories that are crossing the artistic and research landscape of sound studies. In particular, it addresses the idea of ‘attunement’ as a possibility of entering ‘in resonance with’ the non-human, through a survey of the sound sources of Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi and a mapping of how many of these represent potential sources of ‘disturbance’.
During the masterclass, guided listening sessions and recordings of these sound sources are performed, while participants are invited to follow simple vocal exercises with the aim of ‘harmonising’ the previously mapped and recorded sound sources through the creation of choirs. Exploring the possibilities of the choir in tuning in to non-human sound sources, the masterclass has led participants to record the results achieved. Finally, recordings of the sound sources has been installed and put in dialogue with the live impro set performed by Gabriele Mitelli and Laura Agnusdei.
The project has been developed with Francesco Bergamo in the framework of SSH! (Sound Studies Hub, Iuav University of Venice), produced by Palazzo Grassi - Punta della Dogana, and coordinated by Cecilia Bima. The masterclass has been conducted with the collaboration of Beatrice di Fonzo, Carlos Casas, Gabriele Mitelli and Laura Agnusdei.
